The Law Commission have just published their final report and have recommended that the current patchwork of wildlife legislation be replaced with a new, single statute. This would bring together 120 years of legislation, including all of the EU directives, international conventions and national legislation, creating a single clearer and simpler Wildlife Bill. Existing protections for wild animals, birds and plants would be maintained, but with schedules of species reviewed every five years.
Buglife have published a useful commentary and review of the proposed changes: https://www.buglife.org.uk/blog/matt-shardlow-ceo/wildlife-bill-initial-buglife-response
