When ecology, landscape, heritage and masterplanning work hand in hand from day one, everyone benefits – the client, the community and the environment. This joined-up approach helped us secure planning permission for 41 new homes at Land at Mill Lane and London Road, Hitchin, on behalf of our client Martin Grant Land, following a resolution to grant from North Hertfordshire’s Planning Committee.

The proposals will deliver a thoughtfully planned neighbourhood with 50% affordable housing, extensive public open space, new and enhanced wildlife habitats, recreational routes, natural play areas and a strong landscape framework that responds sensitively to its surroundings. The scheme will also provide significant green infrastructure benefits while helping to address local housing needs.

Our masterplanning, landscape architecture, ecology, heritage and arboricultural teams collaborated closely throughout the design process, ensuring that environmental constraints and opportunities informed the scheme from the outset. The result is a development that balances housing delivery with landscape character, biodiversity enhancement and heritage considerations.

Projects like this demonstrate that when ecology, landscape, heritage and arboriculture are integrated into the masterplanning process, the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts.
