What happens when landscape & ecology plan a site together? Phases 1 and 2 of Taylor Wimpey’s Winnersh development were approved unanimously by the planning committee – 229 new homes designed around the character and heritage of their surroundings. CSA Environmental has provided landscape and ecological support throughout, from early protected species surveys through to the reserved matters application.
The scheme demonstrates the strength of multidisciplinary working. Our landscape and ecology teams were involved together from the outset, meaning decisions on tree protection, drainage, habitat strategy and play area design were made collectively rather than resolved separately and reconciled later.
That collaboration shows most clearly in the site’s open space. A network of walking routes, amenity green space and three dedicated play areas, each designed for a different age group, gives the development multi-functional, inclusive space that works for the whole community. Attenuation basins were shaped to double as recreation routes, designed around the site’s existing trees and their root protection areas rather than in spite of them.
On the ecology side, protected species surveys fed into a Biodiversity Net Gain assessment and reptile mitigation strategy, including the translocation of a slow-worm population to a purpose-enhanced receptor area outside the construction zone. The scheme delivers a 10% net gain in habitat, hedgerow and watercourse units ensuring the development enhances ecological value for local wildlife alongside the new community it houses.
