Archaeology

The archaeological resource includes extant remains, such as earthworks associated with prehistoric activity, as well as below-ground archaeological features. Consideration of this resource often commences with desk-based assessment including a review of the county Historic Environment Record (HER), historic maps, aerial photographs and a site visit.

Depending on the nature of the site, further works may be needed, such as a geophysical survey and trial trench evaluation.

Where sites are granted planning permission with a condition for archaeological works, this may include open-area excavation or an archaeological watching brief.
